Danish inside style and design studio Room Copenhagen also inbound links indoors and out when dreaming up minimalist interiors. “We desire sheer materials for curtains and blinds that enable for outside daylight to filter softly into areas,” states Signe Bindslev Henriksen, co-founder of the company, who sums up its design as “poetic modernism”. She tells BBC Society: “Translucency avoids creating a tricky boundary between inside of and outside the house. Overall, we select purely natural, tactile, organic supplies – wooden, stone, leather, linen, warm-toned metals and exposed plaster – and subdued, earthy color tones.”
For David Montalba, founder of Montalba Architects, which has places of work in Los Angeles and Lausanne, Switzerland, integrating sights of the encompassing landscape into a minimalist household is essential to building it come to feel warm. “The landscape can be a house’s rural environment or a courtyard with paving and planting, as found in just a triple-top atrium at our task Vertical Courtyard Dwelling in LA,” says Montalba, who grew up in Switzerland and the Carmel area of California. He is affected by the Southern Californian regionalist architecture of Irving Gill, whose early 20th-Century properties featured uncomplicated interiors, plain fireplaces and skylights, and George Brook-Kothlow, who integrated an abundance of wooden into his residences. “Participating with the outdoor can help soften a minimalist home, as do bookshelves, art and textiles. In one living house at Vertical Courtyard Property, a wall-hung textile piece by Canadian artist Brent Wadden provides heat and texture.”
Convenience zone
And inside designer Rukmini Patel has created a warmly minimalist living place for a residence in Stratford-on-Avon, working with colors and resources encouraged by nature. “My customer, who has a home with a back garden, expressed a wish for the inside to link with the outdoors,” she says. “When creating a cosy minimalist residence, I feel it’s crucial to use a multitude of organic materials, textures and colours that engage the senses. For the dwelling space I chose autumnal tones – rust, burnt orange and olive eco-friendly – and wicker and wood to evoke mother nature. I opted for wooden flooring, echoing this with wood, instead than colder metallic or glass home furnishings, and a warm peachy cream shade for the partitions. I also plumped for a thick, tactile Berber rug that is calming and calming when you sink your toes into it.”
Smith believes a warmly minimalist inside can be achieved simply by combining a confined amount of contrasting textures: “Play with the juxtaposition of opposites as transitioning from just one to the other heightens the senses. Think about walking barefoot on a really hard clean flooring, then stepping on to a soft textured rug, and the sensation of heat and luxury that brings.”
